Gina D'Auria

Over 30 years ago, Gina D’Auria began her career in social work at Fayette County Children and Youth Services. Starting as an intake caseworker, she worked her way up to her current administrator role and still has a deep passion for what she does. “I love being a social worker,” Gina shares, “I believe that this is my calling.”

In 2022, she decided it was the right time to pursue her dream of earning a master’s in social work.

“Obtaining my master’s was something I always wanted to do, but life kind of got in the way,” she explains. “Honestly, people thought I was crazy. I could have retired.”

But when Gina learned more about Widener University’s Online MSW programs, she was even more inspired to continue her education.

“I was really interested in Widener’s program and the focus on trauma,” she said. “The families I work with and the experiences they have are all trauma-based, and I wanted to grow my skill set in that.”

Widener’s flexible online model was also appealing to Gina, as it would allow her to balance school with work and family life. “I loved that it was 100% online, 100% part time, and I could do it when I could fit it in, even at 2 a.m. if I wanted,” she shared.

Gina decided on Widener during her interview with admissions, when she was impressed not only with their passion for the school, but their respect for non-traditional students: “They acknowledged that I came with life experience and that it was valuable. That meant something to me.”

Returning to school after many years wasn’t always easy, but Gina embraced the challenge with the help of her professors and classmates. She was especially motivated by the comprehensive feedback she received on her assignments. “It was more than a grade,” Gina explained, “it was a thoughtful reflection.”

In addition to online coursework, Widener’s MSW program also has a fieldwork portion that students can complete at their workplace. This presented a unique opportunity for Gina to make an impact at the agency where she built her career. “I loved the fact that I could do it with [Fayette County Children and Youth Services],” she said, “and build programming that benefits families we serve.”

Gina graduated from Widener with her MSW in August 2025. In addition to feeling a sense of accomplishment for achieving her longtime goal, she has been producing even more positive outcomes for the families she works with.

“My confidence and my ability to do this work have expanded,” she shared. “Where I was prior to Widener and where I am today are two different places.” Gina is now preparing for licensure and plans to use her newfound skills to advocate for changes in child welfare laws.

When asked if she had any advice for people considering a career in social work, Gina’s message is clear: “If you feel like this is where you’re meant to be, do it. Don’t wait…You’re never too old to learn. I’m proof of that.”
